Early Sunderland Pottery - Silver Lustre

Sunderland pottery silver lustre cream jug c1835

Famous for pink and purple lustre, several of the Sunderland potteries also produced fine silver and copper lustre wares. Silver lustre is probably the rarest of the three to find; production being less and the lustre easily worn or damaged. Quite often evolved from silver shapes, it was intended as a cheaper alternative. Here is a classic example of a cream jug which can be traced back to a silver design by Hobbs of London.
