Don Pottery 'Named Italian Views' Series - detail

This fine series features some twenty five named views of ancient buildings and monuments around Italy and Sicily (a separate state at this time), most of which would have featured on the Grand Tour. Below is a fine plate with the 'Terrace of the Naval Amphitheatre at Taorminium'. Printed in a dark-medium blue it depicts a group of seated travellers viewing the ancient buildings. A rare Don Pottery dinner plate from the 'Named Italian Views' series, showing the 'Temple of Serapis at Pozzuoli'. When first excavated in the 18th century, the discovery of a statue of Serapis led to the building being misidentified as the Temple of Serapis until it was later discovered to be the market building (Macellum) of the Roman settlement of Puteoli.
