Sowerby Glass - Patent Ivory Queen's Ware

Royal Doulton Isaac Walton Ware Jug D2312 U.S. Patent c1906

Based on Izaak Walton's 'The Compleat Angler' first published in 1653, the series depicts combinations of fishermen in 17th century dress with various quotations and willow tree borders. Here is an early art nouveau shaped jug, similar to the Tudor shape, showing various characters from the series. Art Deco - Gray's Pottery

Under the influence of Gordon Forsyth and then later Susie Cooper, Gray's Pottery began to produce hand painted lustre and enamelled wares. By the late 1920s they were well known for their bold floral and geometric designs. Purely decorating studios, they bought in blanks from other factories and quite often the other factory mark can be seen under the larger Gray's backstamp. Here is a lovely plate with a design by Sam Talbot from the mid 30s which shows the great skill of Gray's paintresses. For more details see Premier Antiques
