Carlton Ware Hydrangea


Hydrangea was one of the final 'Australian Registered Designs' to continue the style and colour of classic embossed floral wares. Produced in the late 1940s and early 50s, there are two vibrant colourways - pink flowers on a green ground and pink and blue flowers on a pale blue ground. Here we have a superb little jug in blue. Early Blue and White - Spode's Temple Pattern

Printed in medium blue with a chinoiserie scene of an ornate pagoda with two men on a bridge and framed by a border of stylised flowers, scrolls and moths. It's sometimes called 'two man willow'. Royal Winton 'Hazel' Chintz Dane Cheese Dish c1940

The vibrant colours of this vintage 1930s pattern are enhanced by the smart black ground. Bouquets of yellow and pink roses, yellow and white narcissi edged with tulips and lilac sprays make up a lovely design which is one of the most collected of the chintzes. Joseph Holdcroft Majolica 'Chestnut' Teacup and Saucer c1870

Joseph Holdcroft began the Daisy Bank Pottery in the 1860s and by 1870 was producing fine quality majolica wares. He had previously worked for Minton and this is reflected in his work. Here we have an extremely rare 'chestnut' cup and saucer. The cup modelled as a chestnut and the saucer as a chestnut leaf with flowers. For more details see my website Premier Antiques

Royal Doulton Shakespearean Characters - Shylock

Introduced in 1912 with a fine polychrome background in various colour washes, the series D3596 was amended and added to in 1914 when a sepia background was used and a second series pattern number D3746 given. After more modifications in the 1920s, the series seems to have been withdrawn in the early 1930s. Below are three pieces depicting Shylock from 'The Merchant of Venice'. Losol Ware Armado

First introduced by Keeling's as a print and enamel design around 1910, 'Armado' was produced in several variations over the years. In the late 1920's it was produced in bright enamels on an orange background, lending itself perfectly to the art deco style. Seen here is a lovely hexagonal vase. Blue and White - John Rogers Elephant Pattern

The Longport pottery of John Rogers and Son produced one of the most interesting early animal patterns. Printed in medium blue, it features an elephant and mahout in an oriental garden with trees and pagodas. Most of this pattern seems to have been produced in the 1815-1825 period.
