Royal Doulton Series Ware

Royal Doulton Series Ware 1910-40

Developed by Charles Noke in the early 1900s, Novelty Art Wares (the name initially used for series ware) were inspired by legend, song, literature and history as well as sport, pastimes and olde worlde imagery. Early wares were often intended for nursery use and miniatures were produced to encourage collecting. For a selection visit my website Premier Antiques

Royal Doulton Series Ware

Royal Doulton Series Ware

Introduced by Art Director Charles Noke, Royal Doulton began producing 'Novelty Art Wares' in the late 19th century. Some were based on designs inherited from Pinder Bourne who Doulton had taken over in 1882, but after 1899 most were new themes created by Noke. For a great selection of Series Ware visit my website Premier Antiques

Royal Doulton Series Ware

Royal Doulton Series Ware 1910 - 1935

Series ware was the brainchild of Charles J. Noke who began working for Doulton in 1889 and later became Art Director. Decorated with popular imagery and aimed at the gift and collectors' markets, by 1910 the ranges had grown to include characters from literature, history and sport, to name but a few. Some series were only in production a short while (making them scarce today), while others continued for many years and underwent various changes (which is why one series can have several pattern book or reference numbers). Royal Doulton Series Ware - New Cavaliers

A series of ten images of cavaliers in 17th century dress, often striking drinking poses and sometimes combined with mottoes. Introduced in 1907, the range was extended in 1930 and was withdrawn around 1940. Here is a fine tankard. For more details see Premier Antiques

Royal Doulton Dickens Ware

This year sees the bicentenary of Dickens' birth. He's perhaps remembered most for his characters, many becoming infamous because of their villainy. Charles Noke was a great admirer and used these characters as the theme for one of the first Royal Doulton series. Introduced in 1908, the series was augmented in 1912 for Dickens' centenary. Many items carry Noke's signature, though most of the drawings are close to the original 'Kyd' illustrations. For more Dickens Ware see Premier Antiques
