An extensive range of relief moulded and hand painted wares introduced in 1934 and featuring a variety of water pumps, wishing wells and haystacks, depending on the shape. Gaudy Welsh

Gaudy Welsh first appeared in Staffordshire around the late 1820s and remained popular in various forms for over a hundred years. The main colours were burnt orange, iron red and green painted over cobalt blue. In addition turquoise, yellow and pink were also used along with gold and pink lustre. Early Charlotte Rhead - Bursley Ltd

In 1912 Frederick Rhead became art director of Wood and Sons, and shortly afterwards Charlotte joined her father there to train and supervise tube-liners. In 1920 Woods acquired the Crown Pottery and began producing art wares under the name of Bursley Ltd. Charlotte's main role now was as designer and producer of tube-lined wares for this new enterprise. By the end of 1926 she had left to join Burgess and Leigh (Burleigh Ware). Glass salts make a great alternative to silver and other metals, as the corrosive qualities of the salt doesn't affect them. A lovely sheet pattern based on the old Chinese design representing spring blossom falling on cracked ice.
