Early Blue and White - Spode's Greek Series

Introduced in 1806 and based on illustrations taken from a large work of Sir William Hamilton's collection of antiquities published in 1804, Spode's Greek pattern reflected the taste for all things classical. Four urns or vases in the border remain constant throughout the series, but the themes of the central panel and cartouches between the border urns vary in content. Although produced sporadically throughout the 19th century, rare early Spode pieces are much sought after by collectors. For more details visit Premier Antiques

Gaudy Welsh first appeared in the 1820's and grew from the many oriental based designs being developed at the time. The main colours were iron red, green and cobalt blue. In addition turquoise, yellow and pink were also used along with gold, purple and pink lustre. Gaudy Welsh was produced over a long period of time and potteries such as Allertons and Sudlow continued production into the early 20th century. 'Jazz' is a vibrant combination of arcs, squares, circles, triangles and other shapes in tan, yellow, purple, black and green. A mixture of printing, sponging and hand painting, it was given the name by collectors because of its abstract musical features. Introduced by Grimwades in the early 1930s and reputably sold as a special offer in a magazine, pieces are seldom marked by the factory though occasionally items are impressed 'Winton'. A beautiful bone china trio based on watercolour studies by Percy Curnock, one of Royal Doulton's most talented artists. The thistle famously grows near Glamis Castle, the childhood home of the late Queen Mother. With a new partnership in 1858, the transfer of artist and designer Emile Lessore from Minton in 1860 and the advice of Leon Arnoux, Wedgwood began to perfect their knowledge of majolica production. George Jones Abbey Ware
Originally known as 'Abbey Wreath' and produced by William Adams in the 1840s, George Jones bought many of the Adams patterns in 1861, this being one of them.
