Victorian Glass Salts

Glass salts are great to use and look lovely on the dining table. They were great favourites with Victorian households too; you can see this from the many colours, shapes and sizes. Nice to find in pairs like this green pair with applied clear glass frills to the edge. I like to use them with bone or mother-of-pearl salt spoons. Silver and plated ones look good too, but I always feel they need extra care as salt can badly corrode metals. For more details visit Premier Antiques

Victorian majolica was developed by ceramics expert Herbert Minton and chemist Leon Arnoux and first shown at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. This 'new' Victorian art form combined ceramic artistry and glazing techniques and many unusual shapes were produced. Webb's Cased Satin Glass c1880

From the 1850s the Thomas Webb glasshouse began producing fine crystal and coloured glass. By the 1870s they were famous for producing cased satin glass. Some of the best and most difficult to produce were pieces like the example above, where air has been trapped as the glass is worked to produce a diamond 'quilted' effect. Made in several shapes and colours (pink, blue, yellow and turquoise), examples are now rare to find especially in good condition. See more details at Premier Antiques

Wedgwood had produced green and brown glazed wares since their beginnings in the 18th century. By the 1860s they had started to produce ranges using multi-coloured majolica glazes and by the 1870s had become prime producers of wares in the Aesthetic Movement style. Although not as prolific as Royal Winton, Shelley produced some distinctive all over floral designs which are also much sought after by collectors. Maling Lustre - Columbine

Looking at the pattern books, 1936 was a very productive year for Maling. Many of their most famous designs were introduced then, including 'Columbine', and here we have a stunning jug in rose pink lustre. This classic Maling shape was intended to be used as a flower vase, the hexagonal shape and scrolled handle works beautifully with their floral designs.
