Royal Winton Jazz

Royal Winton 'Jazz' Art Deco Coffee Can and Saucer c1934

'Jazz' was used only for coffee sets which it's thought were bought as a special offer through a women's magazine. Pieces occasionally have the Grimwades/Royal Winton stamp, but most pieces have only the curved 'Made in England' mark in green. Collectors refer to it as 'Jazz' because of the black and white squares arranged like musical notation, though the factory would appear not to have given the design a name or pattern number. Royal Winton Jazz

Royal Winton 'Jazz' Art Deco Cream Jug c1934

'Jazz' is a vibrant combination of arcs, squares, circles, triangles and other shapes in tan, yellow, purple, black and green. A mixture of printing, sponging and hand painting, it was given the name by collectors because of its abstract musical features. Introduced by Grimwades in the early 1930s and reputably sold as a special offer in a magazine, pieces are seldom marked by the factory though occasionally items are impressed 'Winton'.
