From 1801 to 1804 Luigi Mayer published a series of aquatints showing views of Asia Minor. Around 1810 Spode produced the first serial pattern printed on pottery which was based on these views. Each shape and size of ware depicts a different scene, with a shared exotic border which includes elephants, oxen and rhino. The intricate patterns required great skill both in the engraving and fitting of the transfer to each item. For more details on this early and very collectible range, visit my website
