Victorian Slag Glass

Now popularly called slag glass because it was once assumed the waste or 'slag' from coal and coke production was added to the glass to produce the purple, green or blue marbled glass typical of the three North Eastern glasshouses of Sowerby, Greener and Davidson. First used by Sowerby (who were also the major manufacturer), it was originally called 'Malachite'. For more details visit Premier Antiques

Art Deco Chargers by Charlotte Rhead

I've always liked chargers because of their immediate impact. Unlike other shapes, you can see at once the full effect of the design. Often at exhibitions and trade fairs designers like Clarice Cliff and Charlotte Rhead would use them precisely for this reason. Spode Indian Sporting Series c1810

Probably the most sought after of early Blue & White, Spode's Indian Sporting series is quite a rarity. Here is one of two unusual soup plates 'Chase after a Wolf' showing a wolf running with a lamb in its mouth, chased by dogs and Indian hunters with stones and spears. Royal Doulton Blue Children

One of the first Doulton series of themed wares introduced in the 1890s and discontinued by the late 1920s. Mostly printed with some hand painted detail, it's essentially blue and white scenes featuring various aspects of childhood. Here is a fine miniature Blue Children series jug. Shorter and Son - Mabel Leigh

In the early 1930s Mabel Leigh produced a range of wares with incised decoration based on ethnic Mediterranean and Central American designs. Royal Doulton - Pip, Squeak and Wilfred

Pip, Squeak and Wilfred, a cartoon published in the Daily Mirror from 1919 to 1956, was conceived by Bertram Lamb and drawn by Austin Bowen Payne. It featured the adventures of an orphaned family of animals. Pip the dog, Squeak the penguin and Wilfred the rabbit. In 1927, the Pip, Squeak and Wilfred club began. It was named the Wilfredian League of Gugnuncs (based on Wilfred's baby talk) and organised many competitions and events for the thousands of members. To coincide with this launch, Royal Doulton produced a series of childrens' ware items which were sold up to about 1935. Rare to find, especially in good condition, here is a lovely tea plate featuring this charming trio. For more details see Premier Antiques

A lovely Royal Doulton child's cocoa mug featuring nursery rhymes from designs by William Savage Cooper. Illustrating two rhymes - Mother Goose and Where are you going to my pretty maid? Spode's New Stone China

By 1822 Spode had developed a new formulation of their Stone China and began marketing this as New Stone. Orientally inspired patterns continued to be produced on this body and a special backstamp incorporating 'Spode's New Stone' was used. See more early Spode at Premier Antiques

Early Blue and White Pickle Dishes

Small dishes used for serving sweet meats, cachous and pickles were made by many early potters, including Worcester, Caughley, Spode and Minton, but are usually unmarked. Victorian Staffordshire Copper Lustre

A fine 19th century jug with moulded dancers, first introduced by George Ray in the 1850s when dancing the polka became popular. Richardson's Horse Chestnut Vaseline Glass

Featured is a stunning and rare opalescent ruffled vase by Richardson's in their horse chestnut leaf pattern. The moulds were sold to Thomas Webb when the glasshouse closed in 1926, but later Webb pieces are a much darker yellow as they used more uranium in their formula.
