Royal Doulton Daily Mirror 'Pip, Squeak and Wilfred' Mug c1930 |
Based on the Daily Mirror comic strip, this charming Royal Doulton series was only in production from 1927 to 1935. Featuring Pip the dog, Squeak the penguin and Wilfred the rabbit created by Uncle Dick (B J Lamb) and drawn by A B Payne. This rare children's mug shows scene four of five 'Hullo Popski and Auntie - going to join the Gugnuncs?'. The name 'Gugnunc' came about because Wilfred spoke only in baby talk and 'gug' and 'nunc' were his favourite words. The Gugnunc club was formed and held parties and an annual rally at the Royal Albert Hall, raising funds for children’s hospitals and charities. For more details see Premier Antiques
