One of the finest of early transfer printed wares, the Tiber or Rome pattern is based on two aquatints by Merigot published in 'Views and Ruins in Rome and its Vicinity' c1798. Spode introduced the pattern in 1811 and examples seem to be mainly from the 1811-1820 period. Here the quality of the engraving is shown to full effect on this superb soup plate.
