Clarice Cliff - Autumn Crocus & the Conical Shape

Clarice Cliff Crocus on a conical cup and saucer c1932

A classic art deco design, here on a classic art deco shape. After the initial success of the conical bowl and teapot in 1929, other tea ware shapes followed and included cups and saucers. Earlier conical cups have a 'smooth' solid handle, but the design was subsequently produced with a moulded inset in an attempt to make them easier to hold. Bizarre Crocus continued on more traditional shapes such as tankard coffee sets, drum jampots and coronet jugs; not used so much on the new shapes, making conical Crocus items relatively rare.
