Don Pottery 'Named Italian Views' c1820 |
A rare Don Pottery dinner plate from the 'Named Italian Views' series, showing the 'Temple of Serapis at Pozzuoli'. When first excavated in the 18th century, the discovery of a statue of Serapis led to the building being misidentified as the Temple of Serapis until it was later discovered to be the market building (Macellum) of the Roman settlement of Puteoli.
