Davenport's Stone China

Davenport Stone China Japan Pattern Mug c1830

The exact date of manufacture isn't certain but by 1818 records show that Davenport's Stone China was well-established. With a greyish blue body, it was often decorated in an underglaze 'oven' (dark) blue with sketchy outlines which serve as a guide to the painting of bright overglaze enamels in pink, red, mauve, orange, yellow and green. Often finished with gold highlights, the most popular decorations were the old Japan or Imari patterns, exemplified by this fine mug which has survived in superb condition.
