Early blue and white - View of York

English Pearlware Diorama Series 'View of York' Dinner Plate c1825

A lovely scene of York framed by a dense border of trees and flowers to create the 'diorama' effect. This picture viewing device had just been invented in Paris around 1820 and produced a type of early 3D image. The river Ouse is in the foreground and features a small boat and a fisherman.
