Ashtead Pottery 'Madonna and Child' by Phoebe Stabler

Ashtead Pottery 'Madonna and Child' by Phoebe Stabler c1924

A rare Ashtead Pottery 'Madonna and Child' figure designed by Phoebe Stabler - versions were also produced by Poole and Royal Doulton. Under the auspices of the influential Sir Lawrence Weaver, the Ashtead Pottery was set up to provide employment for disabled ex-servicemen and at its height gave work for up to forty men. The company produced many wares designed by leading artists of the day, though it was only in business for just 12 years from 1923 to 1935.
