Shelley Hilda Cowham Nursery Ware Tea Plate 'Little Bo-peep' c1925

In 1924 Shelley employed Hilda Cowham, a well-known children's illustrator, to provide distinctive decoration for a new range of nursery wares. A few months later the first pieces were being sold bearing design registration numbers from 709687 onwards. This lovely Bo-peep plate captures the style of the period, using print and enamel techniques on bone china which made Shelley famous. It carries the first edition registration number 709692. Described as embossed fancy tableware, Grimwades introduced the Beehive range in the mid 30s and various styles of colouring were on offer. Using an old rope beehive or skep as the main shape with brightly painted bee finials, as in this fantastic biscuit barrel, the design was very popular though items are difficult to find now in good condition as many pieces have suffered over the years.
