Gaudy Welsh

Gaudy Welsh 'Bethesda' Ironstone Jug with Dragon Handle c1830

Gaudy Welsh first appeared in the 1820's and grew from the many oriental based designs being developed at the time. The main colours were iron red, green and cobalt blue. In addition turquoise, yellow and pink were also used along with gold, purple and pink lustre. Gaudy Welsh was produced over a long period of time and potteries such as Allertons and Sudlow continued production into the early 20th century. However late pieces are nearly always marked whereas the early wares tended to be unmarked. Here is a fine and early 'Bethesda' pattern dragon jug. For more details see Premier Antiques
