Gaudy Welsh

Gaudy Welsh jug c1830

A generic term adopted after the war to describe wares with a particular palette of underglaze blue with overpainting in pink/copper lustre and iron red. First appearing in the 1820s, it was produced by potteries in the North East, Staffordshire and Wales, and as most early pieces are unmarked, it's difficult to give a definite attribution. Some wares from the North East have impressed factory marks and can be identified. Here are a couple of fine examples, probably from Staffordshire. For more, visit Premier Antiques

The Genius of Josiah Wedgwood

TODAY BBC2 21.00hrs

Historian and author AN Wilson explores the life of Josiah Wedgwood. As one of the founding fathers of the Industrial Revolution, Wegdwood was self-made and self-educated. He was Britain's first great artist-industrialist, an innovative scientist and a believer in the Rights of Man, at a time when Britain was marked by the slave trade. At the core of his mission, Wedgwood wanted to make beautiful objects and he wanted to leave the world a more beautiful place.

Victorian Vaseline Glass - Burtles Tate

Opalescent glass has long been prized and a yellow/green variety was produced by several glasshouses in the late 19th century. Given the generic term 'vaseline glass' by collectors, it was produced by adding uranium to the mixture and then reheating with a torch on areas where the milky opalescence was required. This beautiful jug style vase is by the old Manchester firm of Burtles, Tate and Company who started advertising these wares in the 1890s. Although primarily known for novelty pressed glass, they also produced exquisite hand made items which display fully the glassmaker's art. Made on a pontil (an iron rod which gathered the molten glass), it has an applied clear glass handle and rose pink flowers with clear glass trails. The rim has been nipped in and then drawn to form a spout, the body of the vase then given vertical opalescent vaseline stripes. See more opalescent and vaseline glass at Premier Antiques
