Early Blue and White - Spode's Love Chase

A rare pattern usually on unmarked teawares, depicting Atlanta, daughter of Zeus. She was looking for a husband and suitors were expected to compete with her in a race. The winner would have her hand; losers would be put to death. Many had died as she was unbeatable, but Milanion won the race, with the help of Aphrodite who gave him three golden apples to distract her. Here the scenes are depicted on a fine dish.
