Another brilliant series has begun on BBC4 - 'Sex and Sensibility: The Allure of Art Nouveau'. In Episode 1, Stephen Smith presents a history of the early 20th century art and design movement, beginning by exploring how it changed the face of Paris. He examines pieces of jewellery by Rene Lalique, analyses Alphonse Mucha's posters and visits locations that epitomise the art nouveau style. He also discusses why creative thinkers including architect Hector Guimard and glass-maker Emile Galle believed their work could inspire social change.
Episode 2 examines the influence art nouveau had on British art and design in the early years of the 20th century. For details of broadcasts, schedules, etc. see BBC Radio Times
