Cardinal Wolsey's Angels


The Victoria and Albert Museum has bought four bronze angels originally designed for the tomb of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, adviser to Henry VIII. The figures were sold off during the English Civil War and eventually lost. Cardinal Wolsey's tomb was never completed. The V&A said last year it would cost £5m to secure them. The pieces emerged recently and were brought together at the V&A for the duration of the museum's campaign to secure them.

A fine pearlware plate with a scene taken from 'Oriental Field Sports, Wild Sports of the East' by Captain Thomas Williamson, illustrated by Samuel Howitt and first published in 1805. Spode drew inspiration from the same publication for their multi-scene Indian Sporting series. Herculaneum of Liverpool has been suggested as a possible maker.
